In case your an artist, you might use the shading techniques smudging and cross hatching. If you don't have a smudging tool, (I don't, and I'm perfectly qualified to be an artist) then your finger works just the same. Your fingers come in all different sizes for different things, so I don't see why you can't use them, other than the fact that you might get a little graphite on your hands. Crosshatching is also a great way to shade certain things, simply by drawing some lines going in different directions, differing only by how close the lines are. I've displayed both of these great techniques in the picture, along with some light doodling.
