Friday DIY Roundup #30

Friday, August 28, 2015

Aaah, it's that time of the week again, the time when we gather to relish in that of the craftier side of Pinterest, so that we have something to do over the weekend, besides watch a Netflix marathon. Can you tell I love Friday DIY roundups? I love them so much that I get all poetic-like when I think about them. Friday's have Modern Family on TV- and I LOVE Modern Family. I like to record them all and then curl up with a cup of sleepy time tea and a cozy blanket and watch them until I fall asleep. Yeah, Fridays are pretty great ^~^

Just some inspiration to tide you over ;) Thanks for reading!

10 Blog Post Ideas You've Probably Never Thought Of

Thursday, August 27, 2015

Blog content is one of the most important parts of a blog, but not the most important- that would be design, but I've talked about that in previous posts, and today's topic is blog posts. I love to plan and schedule blog posts, it's really a lot of fun, and I like to know that I have plans. Plans are important, because where would you be if you woke up one morning with nothing to write? You'd be in a very deep hole, with only one ladder, and the ladder is made of uncooked (and unstable) spaghetti noodles, but OH! It's also 10 feet too short. And that's why you should schedule blog posts, and here are a few to start you out~

1. Do a "day in my life" post! I love reading (and watching) these to get a good idea of what my favorite bloggers & vloggers do every day. Remember to take lots of photos ;)

2. Write about (and maybe make a video about) what's in your purse/bag/backpack. It's surprisingly interesting to see what other people carry around with them e.g. beauty products, emergency items, etc.

3. Reverse bucket lists are so cool- it's pretty much a big list of stuff you really DON'T want to do before you die. Fun, right?

4. Organizational tips. Everyone's a bit messy, so why not share your secrets?

5. Share a couple of your favorite recipes, whether they be your own, or off of your foodie Pinterest board.

6. Your skincare routine! We wanna know what you're doing in the morning, before bed, and throughout your day! Your skin is important, and so is keeping readers.

7. Awkward and awesome moments from your week. It was pretty awesome when I spun out on my bike, but awkward when I couldn't hear the store clerk so she repeated herself 5 times and I still couldn't heard her.... *crickets*

8. Your book list, aka what you plan on reading this year, and also a list of books you read in the past year.

9. Pet guest post!!!! Everyone loves cute and furry animals, so why not let your pet take over one day? It'll be fun and we'll all love it, so do it.

10. Finally, your jewelry box. I'd like to snap a few pics and post what I keep in my little jewelry box- I think it would be interesting.

I haven't written one of these in ages, and it was so much fun! I love sharing cute and fun ideas with you guys and I can't wait to write for you again tomorrow, which is a DIY Roundup- I can't wait. Thanks for reading!

10 Things to Do with a Moleskine

Wednesday, August 26, 2015

Moleskines, if you're not already familiar with them, are a common brand of notebooks usually used for bullet journaling and travel journals, but they are also great for other types of journaling and sketching. I LOVE to keep a journal, a sketchbook, or even just an idea book around at all times and the moleskine is just so perfect for that, and it's only $12.56 for a 3-pack on Amazon here. That's a pretty good price for a durable take-everywhere notebook that you can carry just about everywhere you go, not to mention their Kraft-brown covers are totally customizable. Let's see what you can do with one, though~

DIY Journals; saving me money... 1. Make a gratitude journal! Simply write down 3 things you're grateful for every night.

2. Start a one-sentence journal, if you're short on time, and just write down one sentence every day.

3. Start a morning journal. Every morning, as soon as you wake up, write out 3 pages in long hand and then just stop.

4. Copy Da Vinci's notebook habit. Carry it everywhere, and record everything you see, such as your observations on strangers, small sketches, lists, etc.

5. Write down quotes you love. Sit down and write down all of your favorite motivational & book quotes, soaking in all the wisdom you can.

6. Keep an art journal. Record your day using doodles, drawings, stickers, paintings, and other cute embellishments.

Easy Homemade Journals (I made all these in an hour!) Click through for step-by-step tutorial7. Keep a goals journal! Write them down in the form of a checklist, and check them off as you go, using genres- such as daily goals, weekly goals, yearly goals, life goals, etc.

8. Create your bucket list! Similar to the idea above, it allows you to write down every thing you want to do before you die, such as places to go and things to do, and people to meet. You can be constantly adding to it every single day, and checking things off of it every day, too.

9. Use it for writing exercises! That's what I use mine for, and I love writing something new and creative every day. It's a lot of fun and there are so many writing exercises all over Pinterest.

10. Start a language journal. When you're learning a new language, it can be quite difficult, so keeping a journal to record your progress and vocabulary is very helpful.

If you recently bought a moleskine or other journal but don't know what to do with it, then I hope this list helped you out, because it really inspired me to get writing. Thanks for reading!

Friday, August 21, 2015

Happy Friday, guys! I love Fridays because we always do something fun and everyone always has high spirits, and today I'm especially happy, because I'm going to see the new Sean the Sheep movie with my family! First the minions, now the sheep? It never stops! So, I'll probably come home and write about it later, but first, let's get crafty~

4 Summer Meal Ideas

Tuesday, August 18, 2015

When it's so hot out, you really don't feel like turning the oven on (well, I don't) which is why we leave baking, etc. for autumn. Don't get me wrong, I love cooking and baking, but the warm weather just makes me want something light and cool- so I compiled a few warm weather meal ideas, and though I've had this post planned for, like, 5 weeks, BuzzFeed JUST posted something exactly like this. Anyway, are you hungry yet?~

5 Creative Writing Prompts for Kids

Monday, August 17, 2015

So, last week, I did a post on creative journaling prompts for kids, and this week I decided to do something a lot like it because it was fun to do and I think kids of all ages should get in the habit of writing more, especially creative writing, and these prompts are the perfect things to get them started. I've been trying to make my intros a little shorter because I feel like sometimes I spend too much time on it and it can get longer than the actual post- so let's get to the prompts? (Note: I made all of these up, it was so much fun!! c:)

1. You are stuck on an island with these things- 5 books, 5 foods, 2 people, and 1 other item of your choice. What do you choose and why?

2. If you could invent one useful item and make billions of dollars off of it, what would it be and why?

3. "The pandas were angry. The sky darkened as we began to fun, their foot steps getting closer... We never should have taken their time machine."

4. You can create your own school- what is it like? Consider these questions: what subjects are there to teach, where is it located, who teaches there (celebrities?), and what does it look like? How do you fit in (e.g. student, principal, professor, etc.)

5. You have invented a time machine using a stolen robot battery. It only has enough power to take you to 5 different times & back- where do you go, what do you do, and why?

It seems as though the magic word today is why hahaha. I loved coming up with these and I'm hoping to do 5 more in the future to come. Thanks for reading!

I'm sorry for today's short intro, but I'm just so excited to get to the DIYs, so here they are~

Why I Like Picmonkey Better Than Canva

Thursday, August 13, 2015

Picmonkey and Canva are both online photo-editing services that most bloggers use to edit their stock photos for their posts. Now, I've only used Canva 2-3 times, but I already hate it more than any other thing on the internet! It's terrible, so horrendous, and here's why:

1. It's not cheap. If you want it to look good, you gotta pay money, something I don't wanna do when I can get the same thing at Picmonkey for FREE.

2. It's so slow!! It freezes up and glitches and annoys the heck out of me and wastes my time.

3. I don't like the design & system of it, especially how you can "search the web" for stock photos. They aren't free. You can just get on Google Images for the same thing and it's totally free. And I know that Picmonkey isn't completely free, but at least the Royal and non-royal items are reasonable.

All I'm saying is, I would much rather use Picmonkey than Canva, any day of the week, and here's why I love Picmonkey SOOO much.

1. They are always coming out with something new! Every time I look on Pinterest, there's a new tutorial on how to do something awesome and I love that they're teaching me something new in the world of digital editing.

2. They don't combine all features into one big thing-a-ma-jig. There are 4 different sections: Design, Edit, Touch Up, and Collage. It's that simple!

3. They have so many overlays and fonts to choose from, and it's all free, no worries about paying for one little overlay.

Sorry for that, rant over. Anyway, I hope this influenced your choice of online photo editing services, and tell me in the comments below what you prefer- Picmonkey or Canva? Thanks for reading!

7 Awesome Chore Chart Printables for Kids

Wednesday, August 12, 2015

School is just around the corner, and so everyone is really getting back into routine, and not that we don't use chore charts in the summer time (we don't because we're more relaxed, but we still do our chores), but the school year is really the best time to hang one up on the fridge. I love completing all of my chores every week, and then getting an allowance at the end. I just love to see all of my accomplishments up on the fridge! But if you aren't the DIY type for chore charts (like me), then maybe you'd go for some printables like the ones I've picked out below. Enjoy~

6 Journaling prompts for Kids

Journaling is a great subject for kids, and I used to love doing it in school; it was like the highlight of my day in first grade. But when they started to think that it was a complete waste of time, I started to disagree, because writing is something I've always loved, but I didn't get to do it very often, since we only had to write one or two essays a year. We stopped practicing cursive, because the parents got mad that we were spending more time on our handwriting than on math or science. Maybe they were right, but I always enjoyed doing those things, and since we can't do it at school anymore, I do it at home. I think you should encourage your kids to start a journal, since it's benefited me over the years, and here are a few prompts to get them started.
Currently I’m… | [ One Velvet Morning ]: Great ideas for adding some “currently” items in your Project Life journaling

1. Write about a few of your very favorite memories that you never want to forget, perhaps with your family, or your best friends, or a pet.

2. Start a dream journal! Keep a notebook by your bed and every morning, as soon as you wake up, the sooner the better, write down what you dreamt about. Optional: try to interpret your dreams either using a book or looking it up online.

3. Make a list of all your favorite foods, drinks, desserts, etc.

4. Write about your life in the form of a short story, going as far back as possible.

5. Start a gratitude journal! Every day, write 10+ things that you are grateful for.

6. Make a letter journal. You can write letters to anyone, from your parents to your dogs to the barista at Starbucks, but don't send them, keep them safe in your journal.

I hope these inspired you and your child to get writing this week, because it sure inspired me!! I can't wait to dive "write" into my journal later. Thanks for reading!

Friday DIY Roundup #27

Friday, August 7, 2015

So, another crafty Friday! I can't wait to share another collection of awesome DIYs to fill your weekend with. And speaking of, what are your favorite craft supplies? A hot glue gun? Some neon Sharpies? Maybe your X-acto knife? Personally, I'm in love with the metallic Sharpies I got at Michael's- I have 2 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze. They're great for everything! Scrapbooking, birthday cards, notes to myself, etc. I love writing with them because they add a touch of sparkle to my life. I would highly recommend them, and I also got a 5-pack of neon Sharpies at my last craft haul, which are just fabulous. Some people wouldn't classify Sharpies as craft supplies, but since I use them for pretty much everything, they're my go-to everyday pen. Anyway, let's get to the roundup for this week!
Dolly Parton bag!!! #DIY

1. Dolly Parton Bag (as shown in photo) by A Beautiful Mess

2. DIY Painted Bottles by Homey Oh My!

3. Gemstone Soap by Fall for DIY

4. Light-Up Marquee Sign by Homey Oh My!

5. Easy Giant Pretzel Pillow by Studio DIY

6. DIY Funfetti Candle by bethcakes

7. Crochet Kawaii Apple by Down Grapevine Lane

I want some of that gemstone soap soooo bad!! It looks pretty awesome, and what Friday DIY Roundup would be complete without something made by ABM. Also, the pretzel pillow is perfect for beginners because you only need to know how to sew in a straight line! I can't wait to make a smaller version for myself once I get some felt in my next craft haul. Thanks for reading!

How to Keep Your Readers Happy

Thursday, August 6, 2015

Having a blog is actually quite difficult, because it's all about criticism. People are constantly criticizing you for endless reasons, and it's hard to keep them happy, because not everyone wants the same thing. Perhaps one person doesn't like something about your design and wants you to change it, but another person thinks it looks great just the way it is. Who are you going to listen to? You're probably going to freak out, get stressed, and wonder how to keep these random people happy. Keeping them happy is easy, but for some people, it can be a but harder. But I thought about writing a blogging tips post today because I haven't written one in a few weeks or so, and I like to have a variety of posts on this blog, so here you go- a tutorial on how to keep those reading your blog happy & engaged.

Love the mix of bright colors in this home decorFirst, have a pretty design. I've been thinking about redoing my blog design for a little while now, and I think it's a good idea, so tell me what you would think about that in the comments. I've said this before- uber neon is out, make sure your photos are the right size, and for god's sake, PLEASE have a legible font. Not all of us have the easiest time reading tiny, loopy cursive. Don't have too many gadgets, it will distract from the content. Try to limit the number of ads on your page, especially pop-up ones. I don't like those pop-up ads that ask me to subscribe to your blog- it's annoying and I'm not gonna subscribe the first time visiting your site.

Loving the fresh colors of this decor! You need to have consistent content that doesn't include too many subjects. I keep it easy- DIYs, journaling, blogging tips, listicles, art, nail art, etc. If you've never written about fitness ever on this blog, then don't write about fitness because it has nothing to do with anything. Also, try to do something weekly that your readers will look forward to- such as Friday DIY roundups, Sunday Favorites, nail art Saturday, Motivation Monday, etc. It's awesome, and it gives you something to write that day, instead of planning something random. When I say "be consistent", I mean, don't write every day for a month and then drop of the face of the earth for a couple of weeks. Seriously, WHAT? That's weird and we want to expect a new post every day, every week, 3 times a month, whatever.

Again with the content- make sure it's good content! Write something worth reading, not something just for the sake of writing. If you don't have any good content to share today (I know this goes against what I said above, sorry), then take a day off. The next day, tell them you had blogger's block and your readers will probably understand and will always forgive you. Just remember- DON'T WRITE FOR THE SAKE OF WRITING! Have quality content. That's all I have to say.

I say this so much it's become my life quote- turn the freaking Captcha off becaue ain't nobody wanna do that every time they leave a comment. I use Disqus because it's pretty and people like it, and it's totally free (try it out).

That's all I really have to say for today, I feel like this was a little rant, and if it was, SORRY :( I know people don't like little rants, and even though I feel like I wrote one, don't write one yourself because that will NOT keep your readers happy and engaged. Thanks for reading!

10 Summer DIYs for Kids

Wednesday, August 5, 2015

I can't believe it's already August. We've only got a month left, so let's make the most of it! I thought I would write a post about some DIYs that are super kid-friendly but also very summer-y so that it makes it seem like fall hasn't really gotten close yet. Many of these involve getting wet or slimy, or even learning, since you aren't in school and could use the extra knowledge. It's been really smokey here in Southern Oregon, which means not everyone is outside a whole lot, and since the air is kind of cooling off, the pool is cooling off, too. But, last week, we went up into the mountains back to Tannen lake where it wasn't so smokey but still SO hot. It was sort of chaotic, because we forgot one of the water bottles at home, resulting in dehydration, and we went straight out to dinner afterwards (at a fancy restaurant!), but I wasn't going for that because I was COVERED in dirt. Then, I remembered the dogs, and since we were early, we got to go home and drop them off so that I could change into something nice. And that's the unexpected story for today! Now for the crafty part~

Considering having the teens make a giant batch of blue glitter slime in our water table and then letting them take some home in baby food jars. Might have them put the plastic sea creatures in the slime too, instead of making the shark jars...will pin photos if we end up doing this during SRP for "Under the Ocean."1. The idea of a fairy door is adorable, it's the perfect project to inspire the minds of some of the younger kids!! Also, marshmallow catapults are awesome because if you shoot marshmallows outside the dog can just eat them, though I don't know if marshmallows are toxic to dogs? Have an awesome rest of your summer. Thanks for reading!

Top 10 Pinterest Recipes of the Week

Tuesday, August 4, 2015

I hope you guys aren't getting sick of reading these, because I'm sure not getting sick of writing them. These are kind of a "winging it" type of post because I never really plan them. You see, when I planned out my posts for August, I never really remembered these... So now, every time there's a post that I don't feel like writing because it sounds short and boring, I replace it with one of these! I'm in such a culinary mood this week, probably because I've been watching all of Rosanna Pansino's Nerdy Nummies videos. I actually made cupcakes a few nights ago... Nothing major, just some yellow cupcakes, some with icing inside and some on top. They were so yummy, and there's even one little one left, sitting on the counter, after watching every single one of his little buddies get eaten. Unfortunately, there's no more cupcake mix, and the store is out of stock, too. It just wouldn't be the same to get yellow cake mix and a jar of frosting. Haha, I'm eating Boston Creme Pie Toaster Streudels right now for breakfast- are you hungry yet? ;) Well then let's get started~

I don't see how anyone could sleep this late, but I guess I'm just a morning person! I want to make cheesesticks later :P Thanks for reading!
